SHOP GOOD IN ARTBEAT

November 18, 2009 · Leave a Comment

cover of November issue of ArtBeat

did you see the latest issue of ArtBeat? Oklahoma City’s art magazine did a two-page spread on Shop Good this month!

we had a great afternoon talking with managing editor, Missy Hancock, and we feel so warm and fuzzy after reading all the nice things she had to say about us. i mean, who wouldn’t want to be featured on the front page of the Thanksgiving issue??

so re-heat your coffee and read on, Shop Gooders…

THANK YOU

November 15, 2009 · 1 Comment

for making our grand opening so great!

gum and coltrane both rocked harder than any band has ever rocked. emily enabnit showed her art, and captured the night perfectly in a painting we all watched her create. joe’s addiction provided the greatest chai in the world. and according to our bouncer, 4.3 million people came!

thank you, thank you for all of your support! please come back to the store (and bring a friend), and keep checking back for more great products and events in the very near future!

A TUNE FOR TODAY: GUM

October 22, 2009 · 1 Comment

it’s rainy and cloudy today, friends. so we thought we’d provide you with a little pick-me-up.

(we wish we meant we were on our way to your cubicle with a cup of Joe’s chai. but this is almost as good.)

our friends, Gum, have put their EP on their website and you can download it for free! you can also get a little listen on their myspace page. but whatever you do, make sure you listen to “Let It Go.” if it doesn’t make you feel happy, i’ll make you that cubicle visit.

Gum will be rocking out at the SHOP GOOD grand opening party [friday, november 13th, 7–11p] so come meet them and help yourself to free caffeine and cookies in celebration of the new store.

PLAZA DISTRICT FEATURED ON DISCOVER OKLAHOMA

October 21, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Discover Oklahoma recently did a feature on the Plaza District (the arts district where we are located). It’s a great overview of the area and some of the businesses here. It was shot a couple weeks before we opened our doors.

(that’s our friend Corrie in the brown tank top. You should be friends with her too)

YES

October 18, 2009 · 2 Comments

so what’s the deal with Shop Good? well, here’s a little backstory…

justin and i (audrey) have been screen-printing and selling social-justice-themed tees for a little less than a year now. and it’s been insanely fun. justin spent days watching tons of cheesy 80s videos on youtube to try to learn how to use the giant, blue, multi-armed, noisy machinery we got to do the actual printing. and i’ve been hacking away at a manageable version of an accounting spreadsheet while reading a book that tries to teach me the basics of income and expense through the example of a lemonade stand. there are no lengths of nerdiness to which we will not go.

so after a great trial run of our Wandering Wear clothing line at a conference we help to put on here in OKC (Nomads) and tons of encouragement from our community of friends who live and work with us, we began connecting with others in the metro who love people, love art and love taking risks in the name of creative philanthropy. several local nonprofits, The Spero Project and Convergence Collective, got interested in our stuff at the same time that the blossoming downtown Plaza Arts District caught our eye. that relationship developed into a once-a-month outdoor “fair trade” market in the Plaza with 6-7 nonprofit vendors contributing products and giving proceeds to good causes. and thus, Shop Good was born.

as interest has grown, our connections have widened—and the time to build and decorate the market expanded from a few hours into almost 2 full days—Convergence offered us a nice little chunk of their gorgeous window-front space and we jumped on board with taking Shop Good to a 5-day-a-week retail shop.

and we’ve hardly sat down since. it’s been a blast to build displays, arrange necklaces, make all-day trips to Ikea for lighting, order clothes from brands we’ve long admired and connect with others who make art in the form of hoodies, wallets, belts or scarves.

thanks for being interested in the things we make, for coming to spend a rainy afternoon with us at the shop, for quietly standing for social justice with your purchases, for wanting to know more about us than the price on our tee shirts. thank you for being our friends.
